Organised by Horticulture NZ, the Young Grower competition tests fruit and vegetable growers in their industry skills. Seven competitors from throughout Central Otago took part in a series of challenges at the Otago Polytechnic Central Campus designed to test their knowledge and skills. These included tractor driving, first aid, irrigation, pest and diseases and a hortisports challenge as well as presenting a speech at the awards dinner. Mr Carrol worked in orchards during school and university holidays before realising horticulture was the industry for him.

The sale takes place from 9. Plants, vegetables and fruit on offer will include bedding plant punnets of gazanias, petunias, poppies, lobelias, herbs, tomato varieties, figs and strawberries. There is also a variety of natives, tussocks and trees. All the plants have been propagated and grown by students on the year-long National Certificate in Horticulture. The sale gives them the opportunity to sell their course-grown plants to the public. We have some very special new asparagus, autumn raspberries and Italian artichokes and also have a variety of natives from the local area, and trees which do well here. Items can be purchased using cash or Eftpos. Money raised from the plant sale benefits the horticulture students, used for extra field trips and additional horticultural resources.

Otago Polytechnic horticulture lecturer Jo Wakelin said the giant sale is a popular fixture for the region's gardeners.

He has owned an orchard, run a consultancy business, recertified spraying contractors throughout the South Island, won a national award and represented New Zealand at a conference in the UK. The awards aim to recognise 20 alumni in their twenties who have demonstrated outstanding achievements, contributed widely to their communities, or have shown exceptional leadership in their personal or professional lives. Nominations were received from the wider Otago alumni community, friends, employers and colleagues. Alumni Engagement Manager Donnella Aitken-Ferguson says the calibre of all nominations was extremely high, and the panel of judges drawn from across the four academic Divisions at the University had a difficult task in choosing the 20 award recipients.
